Ms. Fidelis Nunez was born in Hopkins Village in Belize but grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and comes from a family of 12 brothers and sisters. She immigrated to the United States when she was nine years old and was raised by her oldest sibling, Marie. She attended St. Mark Catholic School, Roberto Clemente High School, Loyola University of Chicago, and is now pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts at Argosy University. She has been active in the Garifuna Community in Chicago from the age of 10. She has been involved in pageantry and was crowned Miss Garifuna of Chicago at one point, dance instructor, and party planner. The Garifuna group she was a member of has performed at the Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Evanston Ethnic Festival, and several church functions. She is also a member of the Garifuna Settlement Day Planning Committee who came together to form the Garinagu Lun Awanseruni of Chicago Incorporated and holds the secretarial position. Her main objective is to assist GLAC off the ground and for it to become the pillar of the Garifuna Community in Chicago and abroad, and to assist our fellow villagers with funds to better prepare their children academically for the future, and to also promote cultural and language awareness in the Chicagoland area.
